I believe x264 was recently updated, but enforcing the upgrade results 
in the removal of mplayer et al.:

  x264

  mplayer mplayer-skins mplayerplug-in

... apparently a library is missing from the x264 package:

# apt-get install mplayer
 .

  mplayer: Depends: libx264.so.54
E: Broken packages
