I had/have this problem on Cent OS 4.4 and 5.0.  There is probably a
much better way than the following, but I did not have the patience to
find it.  The fix that I use is to copy the c:\windows\fonts folder from
a Windows install into $home/.fonts and/or (sorry, don't remember which
or if both) $home/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts
