Amongst other things, the problem was that centos-3 is now well embedded in 
various environments, so we dont want to change the way a core part of the 
system works - by moving from yum < 2.4 to yum >= 2.4

There was discussion at one point to move this new yum into the centos-plus 
repo, if you care about that feel free to raise a new thread and request that 
this be done - that way people who maintain centos-3 as well as the people who 
work on the packages might be able to review the present state and make some 
decisions on it :)
